JANUARY 02, 2018
Here's your weekly report on Tulane Basketball (10-4 | 1-1 AAC) for the week of January 2nd.
Tulane's AAC season started with a bang when the Green Wave pulled an 85-75 upset over the Temple Owls in Philadelphia.
In context, this certainly felt like the biggest win of the Coach Dunleavy era. The Wave stayed in control from start to finish to open 1-0.
Then unfortunately, the Wave crashed back to shore in its AAC home opener with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
Tulane was seen as a slight favorite by the advanced stats, but a bad shooting night (including 25.8% shooting from behind the arc on 27 attempts) combined with getting beat on the boards -- 52 to to 30 in Tulsa's favor.
This has been the recipe for beating the Wave -- with Tulane struggling from the floor, you can do serious damage if your bigs are winning on the boards).
Just one game this week, and it'll be a home bout with the talented SMU Mustangs.
KenPom.com ranks the Ponies in their Top 25 at #24. This team is highlighted by their shooting (where they rank #32 in the country in effective field goal percentage) and on the boards (at an impressive #22 in offensive rebounds).
That second stat isn't a good one for us. That said, Tulane lead by double digits on the road in Dallas last year before letting a lead slip away, so the Wave knows they can hang with this team.
Additionally, SMU does turn the ball over (#164 in country in turnovers allowed), so the Wave will could use a scrappy defensive performance at home to make this interesting.
Game Time: 8 PM, Devlin Fieldhouse | National TV - ESPNU
Tulane closes the first week of AAC play in the RPI Top 100, boosted by that road victory over the Owls.
